Program Description
The purpose of the seminar is to give a detailed account of the laws and procedures for handling adoptions in Texas. It will present an overview of the issues, highlight changes to the laws and focus on specific areas of the law important to effectively handling adoptions in a variety of circumstances. Attorneys, guardians ad litem, social workers, counselors, nurses, judges, psychologists, legal assistants and administrators who work in the area of adoption area urged to attend.

Each participant will receive written materials prepared by the faculty.

Objectives

  • Provide an overview of Texas adoption law
  • Provide a detailed explanation of the termination or parental rights
  • Discuss the ethical considerations to avoid malpractice
  • Explain the need for trial strategies and use of experts in contested adoptions
  • List the requirements for a domestic, international, step, relative and post placement adoptive situation and list seven forms that reduce worker error and effort
  • List seven areas of expertise needed to provide ethical adoption services and referrals/resources for gaining this expertise
  • Explain differences in process from non-Hague vs. Hague country
  • Define the difference between IR3 and IR4 visas and when adoption or re-adoption is relevant and the time sensitivity of documents in the international adoption process
